Brain Injury Leadership Academy Welcomes New Class of Conscious Therapists!

The Conscious Therapist: Mindfulness Applied workshop was held November 3-4, 2023, in Greenville, South Carolina. It included professionals in various roles in neurorehabilitation including Neuropsychology, Speech Language Pathology, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Recreational Therapy, Case Management, Vocational Specialists, and Rehab Counselors, among others.

The two day workshop addressed topics such as the Conscious Therapist model, mindfulness and emotional intelligence, the importance of why and how we do rehab, as well as the neuroscience behind it all. This workshop laid the foundation for its participants to begin a journey of significant personal and professional growth.

Participant Thoughts:

“(I am) overwhelmed with this new knowledge, yet excited to slowly start to practice and apply it in the moment.”
“The course exceeded by expectations. Collaborative interactions gave me more insight and aspects to look at in regards to leadership and overall learning.”

Make the shift.

Based in Greenville South Carolina, the Brain Injury Leadership Academy represents a venture to support the development of leaders in the field of brain injury rehabilitation, and thereby advancing the field of rehabilitation, through increased personal awareness, increased self-mastery and mindfulness through the application of conscious professionalism principles.

There is a rich heritage of core principles that can be found in place in our clinics, hospitals, and post acute services, though perhaps not recognized as such. Jim Dethmer, co-author of our course text, refers to this as “eating our own cooking” - if principles of emotional intelligence applied in a mindful way to persons with neurological injury can make a difference in outcomes and quality of life, perhaps they can have similar impact on the clinical leader’s own personal growth!

We believe neurorehabilitation professionals are uniquely positioned to benefit from a mindfulness-based approach to leadership development because the concepts of conscious professionalism are built on some of the very same constructs used in our treatment and training today.
